Following François Bayrou’s announcement of a vote of confidence in the National Assembly on September 8, 2025, Ifop surveyed the French people for LCI on 26 August 2025 to gauge their perception of the political situation and the future of the government.
Asked to specify their main feelings about France today, respondents mainly evoked emotions of vigilance and reserve: 62% mentioned concern, and 23% anger, both up slightly on the spring survey. Conversely, positive responses are declining: 7% mention hope and 4% pride.
On the question of renewing the Assembly, almost two out of three French people (63%) said they were in favor of a dissolution, with 33% « completely » and 30% « somewhat » in favor. This is a marked increase on previous months (50% in July, 41% in June).
In terms of perceived probability, 49% consider dissolution possible in the coming months (12% « certainly » and 37% « probably »), while 51% consider it unlikely. Public opinion thus appears divided on this scenario, but the idea is gaining ground.
Asked about several statements relating to the future of the government and the President of the Republic, participants expressed a need for clarity. 74% felt that a no-confidence vote and the resignation of the Bayrou government would indicate that France was facing real governance difficulties. 68% felt that in the event of a dissolution without an absolute majority, Emmanuel Macron would have to step down. Finally, 50% approve of Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s position calling for the resignation or impeachment of the President of the Republic.
