In September 2025, Ifop conducted a survey for L’Humanité on the state of mind of the French people with regard to the economic and social situation, and the causes of the anger being expressed in the country today.

The results of the survey reveal a profound state of unease among the French. Today, 51% of French people say they are revolted by the country’s economic and social situation. Confidence has also plummeted: while 12% said they were confident in 2022, only 5% are confident today. Anger is fuelled first and foremost by the crisis in hospitals and schools (92%), then by the financial difficulties of employees (89%) and finally by tax fraud (87%).

In this climate of tension, the French are expressing a strong desire for social justice and control over the use of public money. 92% say they want mandatory transparency on all aid received by companies, and 89% want aid to be conditional on social (employment, wages) and environmental criteria. In the same vein, 89% would like to see each company’s social and economic committee informed of the amount of aid it receives, while 86% believe that aid should be reimbursed in the event of relocation. Other measures also meet with broad approval: 81% are in favor of deducting the amount of dividends paid to shareholders from public aid, and 77% are in favor of requiring aid to be repaid when a company emerges from difficulties.

Finally, confidence in political parties remains low: none of them is trusted by more than 50% of the population to pursue a policy of strengthening equality and fairness in France. The Rassemblement National obtained the highest score (37%), ahead of the Ecologists (28%) and the Socialist Party (27%).
